Can You Have a Capybara as a Pet in Florida?

The short answer

In Florida, capybaras cannot simply be bought and kept like a dog or cat. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regulates capybara ownership and requires a permit, and the rules can change, so anyone seriously asking should check current FWC requirements directly. But the permit is honestly the smallest hurdle.

The real question

A capybara is a semi aquatic herd animal. It needs constant access to swimming water, companions of its own kind, significant secure space, a specialized diet, and a veterinarian comfortable with a 100 pound rodent. That is not a pet setup. That is a small sanctuary, with sanctuary costs, and it is exactly how capybaras end up needing sanctuary care when the reality lands.

The better answer

If what you want is to sit with a capybara, feel that famous calm, and feed one by hand, you can do that this week without taking on a two decade responsibility. Our guided sessions give you the joy, and the capybara keeps the professional care.

Spend real time with capybaras the right way.
