How Big Do Capybaras Get?

The numbers

Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world. Adults stand up to about 2 feet at the shoulder, stretch about 4 feet long, and commonly weigh 77 to over 100 pounds, with large individuals heavier still. Females typically outweigh males.

What that actually feels like

Photos do not prepare people. A capybara is the size of a mid sized dog built like a barrel, and when one leans against you, and they do lean, you feel every pound of it. First time guests say the same word almost every visit: they are so much bigger than I thought.

Why size matters for care

This size is exactly why capybaras overwhelm private owners and why ours live in professional care with space, water, and companions built for a 100 pound semi aquatic rodent.

Come feel the lean for yourself.
